Tamaras [Ordinary Supergirl] is one of the years best-produced records, a perfect collaboration between artistic vision and the recording process. Hints of Edie Brickell and Alanis Morissette mixed with a Melanie/Gwen Stefani-esque voice, layered with some funk and ever-shifting tempo and moods are an artistic delight but often a studio nightmare. It works here to perfection. A uniformly strong record across all its tracks, Ordinary Supergirl should make some sales noise and is a great soundtrack candidate for producers looking outside the box. The album is the fifth full-length release from Tamaras, who is part of Universal Love Music, a woman-owned and operated independent label.Tamaras Empowers Through Socially Conscious Music

The pronunciation of her name rhymes with glamorous, yet the socio-political singer-songwriter Tamaras lives an authentic life more exciting and alluring than the typical definition of that word. A sassy Californian of true substance, Tamaras describes the world with hard-focused exactitude and a dazzlingly clear soprano, slashing the image of one born and bred within the Hollywood/Los Angeles dynamic. She also champions nearly all sociologicalcauses one canthink of...That progression is apparent on newer material, which meanders through funk, hip hop, folk, rock, and other genres.

Tamaras music, which has been described as a union of grunge, funk and jazz, was inspired by the many musical influences that she has had.Her musical odyssey began early. Born in Hollywoodit was there that, at only 11 years of age, she would begin writing songs and playing the guitar to escaped the harsh reality of a troubled childhood. It wasnt the easiest childhood, she admitted. My way of escaping that was through music. With her music, Tamaras made it through the rough times. After high school, Tamaras enlisted in the military where she spent the next two years. However, life as a grunt wasnt to be her destiny. Im a real patriot, said Tamaras. Then I realized that a lot of it is hypocrisy. The military trains you to kill, to not think, and that isnt what life is about. Returning to civilian life, Tamaras headed back to Hollywood to make it as a musician. But,like many other independent artists, she grew disenfranchised with the experience. I realized the Hollywood scene is not suited for me, she said. Its not a nurturing environment. Unlike much of the bubble gum music that can be heard on the radio, Tamaras music deals with real issues, which include topics about life issues and the environment. I talk about being inspired by life, the interconnectivity of everything. We get so bombarded in our daily lives that we dont realize how great life is....Aside from playing music, Tamaras and partner, Elyse Avella created their own music label in 1997, Universal Love Music, which has produced all five of Tamaras full length albums. Ideally what Id like to do with Universal Love Music is to be able to give the people who are working for me salaries, Tamaras said. Once that happens, she said, Universal Love Music will start taking on other artists.Theres a lot of artists out there that are wonderful, but are being overlooked, she said.

I like her because shes Bisexual and upfront about it, but not bang you over the head hardcore. I also like her because she is the greatest, most innovative voice Ive ever heard, other than Joan Armatradings, and I like her because when I first met Tamaras at the Aurafice, she walked right up and hugged me. And shes the kind of performer who makes her audience feel special, one person at a time, whether there are two people cheering or a hundred, you know shes singing to you. So, if that doesnt make you want to see this talented performer, know that when I first met Suzanne Vega in a little ramshackle blues club in Chicago, she had the same vibe. And now you cant get anywhere near Vega without a VIP pass. Can we say, take the opportunity while you can?...Don't say I didnt give you a heads up when she blows up big and you have to pay top dollar to see her.
Tamaras brings something fierce to Eureka

Shes a free spirit born of Mother Nature trapped in the streets of Los Angeles - all the better material for her to write her enigmatic songs with...I have different subject matter, Tamaras said in a phone interview from Spokane, Washington I write about human plight. Being from Los Angeles, theres a lot of turmoilI end up writing about it because these are our brothers and sisters and not enough care is being given. Tamaras said shes been described as a mix of P.J. Harvey with a darker Ani Difranco, and while she doesnt mind being compared to such geniuses, shed rather be known on her own terms, with her own sound. Her 4-year-old record company, co-founded with Elyse Avella, is called Universal Love Music, We want to sign high quality music. We love everything. As it has for many, Tamaras said the difference music has made in her life is incomparable. I was hyperactive when I was a childMusic has helped me to focus and keep me from getting into a lot of trouble, Tamaras said. I thank god for giving it to me. You get to interact with people when youre on stage. Youre sharing that with another person, right then and thereyoure looking into their eyes. Tamaras knew at the age of 5 that she would be a musician. I wanted to be a veterinarian because I love animals, Tamaras said as she let two kittens sleep in her lap. My mother played the Beatles and I thought the music was fun and energetic. I said as a little girl I wanna do that! Tamaras said her father showed her the A chord on a guitar. She went on to use this one and only chord to write her first song about reincarnation. Working on her fourth album, Tamaras hasnt always been solo. She has a band she plays with, but this tour is just her. The audience becomes my band. We can get more into the songs and less into the backing of the whole instrumentation....The tour has been amazing, Tamaras continued. Its been pretty magical. Its a good living not monetarily good, but I feel wealthy in so many aspects.

Ordinary Supergirl":
Tamaras, Universal Love Music, CD Written By James Culp
2004
I just got my hands on this really spiritual album and I need to tell you how awesome it is: its awesome! The title of the CD is "Ordinary Supergirl" and the artist/goddess is Tamaras. Know this name. Ill repeat it slowly T-a-m-a-r-a-s. The artists guitar work is best described as acoustic and aggressive, accompanied by some of the most powerful, clouded, deep, well-balanced, real, naked, luscious lyrics.

Back From Japan
February 27,2003 Singer/songwriter/guitarist TAMARAS calls Hollywood,Calif., home. But her restless feet and desire to meet new people through the conduit of song keeps her very much on the move, pounding the concreteof the Northwest and finding her way into coffeehouses, colleges and small clubs, happy to show up somewhere shes never been with an opportunity to reach someone new... Tamaras describes the music she performs as funk/rock/soul aggressive acoustic. Basically, youve got a young woman with a guitar, a microphone, a rich penetrating voice and a head full of deeply personal rhymes set to music. She spent nearly two months this winter touring Japan with a three-piece guitar-bassdrum combo It was a big, beautiful experience, she says but is back in the States once again, setting up solo in just about every remembered and forgotten corner of Washington and Oregon. A live album of her final Japan show (called Ichi G Ichi E) should be ready by showtime. Ask her about it...
