Scene - Week of February 23, 2004
Jennifer Savage, Band Profile: Sweet and cool at Redwood Yogurt

Over 70 people showed up for last Saturday's lo-fi blowout at Redwood Yogurt... "blowout" being a relative term, what with the music being on the pretty, quiet side and all... Anyway, what's definite is that a crowd filled the yogury while even more fans peered through the plate glass from the street.

Who were they there to see? You'll remember from last week's Eye: Cemetery Love Club, Microwave Vacuumcleaner, Mike Conway and The Ian Fays.

The Ian Fays

The Ian Fays have garnered much attention in these pages this year, deservedly so. Quick update: that Meaningless deal (Eye, Jan. 24) lived up to its name, so the girls decided to self-release their CD instead. They've also added two new members since then, filling out and defining their sound. They're playing the Placebo on Friday, March 26 watch for details.

Cemetery Love Club

Made up of the world's most in-love couple, Katie Kovacich and Ryan Blackmore, Cemetery Love Club offers sad and dreamy music adorned with Katie's angelic voice. "We're super in love and happy," Katie explained, "but the music doesn't reflect that."

Mike Conway

Mike Conway played drums for 13 years, then sold them and bought a guitar. It traveled easier and fit naturally with his soul-stripped songwriting style. His songs cover everything from "windows into the relationship world" to "sarcastic twists and screwing up." His music fits in somewhere between Paul Simon and Ben Harper. See Mike at the Placebo, April 17.

Microwave Vacuumcleaner

Microwave Vacuumcleaner is Craig Peters, five months into HSU and seven years of bands behind him. He's now focusing on "short, melodic folk rock songs... really lo-fi," that he hopes people hear as filled with "happy energy more than anything."
