KHUM Blend, Vol. 2
(Radio)

KHUM-FM 104.3/104.7, “Radio without the rules,” has released the KHUM Blend, Live from the KHUM Studio, Vol. II, a collection of live performances recorded on the air on KHUM.

The second installment in the KHUM Blend CD series is focused on North Coast bands and musicians. Some fun album facts:

  • The Rubberneckers’ “Another Sunny Day” was broadcast remotely from a farmhouse in Blue Lake. This performance, as well as the Delta Nationals’ “Ovila Beaudoin,” were featured during KHUM’s “Back Porch” live music show.
  • The CD includes the debut of “Breakin’ The Bank,” by John Berning, who is well-known for his gas-price protest songs and has been played on NPR’s Car Talk.
  • After “Gadjo Train” was played, a member of the Absynth Quintet was visibly upset that the train whistle was in the wrong key.
  • Errol Previde Quartet’s “Fever” is the oldest recording on the CD, found in KHUM’s archive for October, 1998. The band no longer exists.
  • The Nucleus made up “Improv in D Minor” on the spot.
  • “Bodhi Tree” by Lila Nelson is the most-requested song on the album, and remains a KHUM favorite. Nelson, who is now a DJ for KHUM, was a relative newcomer at the time. It was recorded during a live in-the-round songwriter celebration of the Humboldt Folklife Festival.
  • The dog on the inside flap is Charlie, who comes in with Mike Dronkers.

The KHUM Blend series started nearly three years ago with a compilation of live performances from the KHUM studio in Ferndale, with the profits going to the Stop the Violence Fund at the Humboldt Area Foundation. The Stop the Violence Fund annually supports local organizations that work to fight the effects of violence and to help prevent domestic abuse. All net proceeds from Vol. II will go to Stop the Violence, as well.

KHUM Blend, Vol. II is available at local outlets including The Metro in Arcata and The Works in Eureka and Arcata. Visit www.khum.com for more information.
